Alternatives, We Love to See Them

There are many different forms of media like, the news, films, TV, and online reports that give an impression to teens that many abuse drugs. In actuality that is not the case. Most teens do choose to refrain from using a drug because they're more focused on their goals & future successes. Now, that teen can with out a doubt be you.

Alternatives to using substances are very common and for you as a teen there are many you can engage in. However, there are a few teens out there that do not realize this and have more motivation to use then to not. Why do you think that is? Maybe that individual is experiencing depression, peer pressure, experimentation, or they use substances to escape or because they think it's fun. For teens who decide to engage in substance use it does not make them a bad person but it simply might just mean they are unaware of the different healthy alternatives based on their situation. Instead of choosing to go down the path of using substances, what are a few healthy alternatives that teens can do? Some of your answers may match what we have, take a look below & see.

  • Join a club or team of your interest

  • Talk to a counselor at school or a trusted adult

  • Create a exercise routine

  • Volunteer

  • Take up a part time job

  • Write in a journal

  • Find a hobby like musical theater

As you came up with different options & looked over the ones we provided, you can see that there are quite a few things you can do instead of turning to drugs. With being out of school recently and having a lot more time on your hands, the more you fill your time up with healthy options, the less likely you will engage in substance use. Try to encourage your friends to do similar activities with you so you aren't alone. Just remember to keep a safe social distance during these times so you all can stay healthy & safe.

Friends That Choose to Use

Even though most teens decide not to use substances, you may start to know more & more people who choose to use. If your friend starts to use marijuana or abuse a prescription drug, what do you think is your responsibility as their friend is? Maybe that question was easy for you to answer but if it wasn't, that's okay because that's a tough situation to be placed in, especially as a teen. As their friend, it's not your responsibility to stop a friend's drug use but showing them you care by encouraging them to stop can help them make that decision to quit. At the end of the day, it's up to your friend to make the decision to stop but your encouragement can go a loooong way. Think about some of the professionals at your school & how you could encourage your friend to talk with them for help. See our list below.

  • Guidance Counselors

  • Coach

  • Teachers

  • Resource Officer

In addition to professionals at your school, here are some people in your community who could also be a good resource to go to.

  • Horizon Behavioral Health

  • Youth Pastors

  • Addiction Counselors

  • Parents

Keep in mind there is also a confidential & free national helpline that can provide great help as well for someone experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. The number is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Being a positive influence for yourself and even your friends can help create a brighter future for you both.
