Emotions, What Are Those?

Updated: Nov 2, 2020

I want you to stop and think about the moment you woke up today. What kind of mood were you in?

Did you wake up and immediately say, "today is going to be a great day" or did you say, "wow I can already tell today might be rough." Thinking back on how you felt you probably can come up with some reasons as to why you might have woke up on the good side of the bed or the bad side.

The Ride of Emotions

You might feel like the mood you woke up in will set the tone for that entire day. Maybe you get to school and hear the words "pop quiz" from your teacher and immediately get frustrated about it but then hours later they're having your favorite meal at lunch so you get really excited about it. By now you probably know that emotions are like a roller-coaster. One minute they may be up and the next they're down and all around. It can be easy for you and I to immediately act upon our emotions without hesitating or truly thinking about them. I mean no one is perfect, right?

That's why the more you practice how to manage those emotions at any given time or situation, the easier it becomes.

"Practice makes perfect"

Emotions 101

Think about all the words & definitions you have ever heard in your life. When you hear the word emotional awareness what definition comes to your mind? Being emotionally aware just means that you can recognize how you may be feeling at a given moment or how someone else might be feeling. This can be a very beneficial skill that comes in handy throughout your life but of course we all need to practice in order for us to become good at it. Like many great people have said before, "the world was not built in one day" and that goes for this skill as well. It takes time but you can absolutely achieve it in the end.

Try these helpful tips to improve your emotional awareness:

  • Keep a journal where you identify your emotions at any given time

  • Practice observing other people's facial expressions

  • Complete the sentence " I feel (insert emotion) when _______ happens"

How's It Going for You?

If someone were to ask you "how have you been feeling lately?", what would your answer be? Truly, what would it be. Maybe it's sad because you're missing all your friends and haven't be able to hang with them in a while or maybe you're mad because you feel like all special events/activities were taken away from you because of COVID-19. You can most likely name a ton of emotions you've experienced over the last couple of weeks, right? Well think about what ways you've tried to handle those feelings. Hopefully you were able to think of a few healthy ones. If not, have no fear cause below are some suggestions just for you!

  • Let music be your best friend: No matter the emotion, let music fill your ears and rock out. Release all your negative or positive energy with some kickin' dance moves.

  • Don't be afraid to talk it out: Another person to listen may be exactly what you need. Grab someone you trust & see if they will let you vent for a bit.

  • Nature is awesome: Fresh air can do the soul some justice. A simple walk could be a cure to a bad mood or even an enhancement for a happy one.
